How to select a Family Law Attorney
There are a lot of misconceptions clients have when they start the process of getting divorced. These misperceptions end up costing everyone a lot of money in attorney fees and costs. My advice to the client is to find an attorney you trust, and the listen to their advice! There are many attorneys who will tell you what you want to hear in order to get your business – remember, family law attorneys get paid whether they win or lose. When speaking to an attorney you are considering retaining, look for knowledge of the subject matter, their manner of presentation, and their ease in relating to you. These are the things that matter when you consider with whom you will journey through the rough terrain of your divorce. Please click here for more information regarding Divorce and Dissolution.
Spousal support is probably the most misunderstood subject in family law. Potential clients often believe that, regardless of the fact that their family will now be living in two households with the same amount of money available to support them, they are entitled to the “lifestyle of the marriage”. This is a misconception. Both parties are entitled to it, but most do not live it after they separate. It is really just math – is there enough money for both spouses, post-separation, to live the standard of living of the marriage? If not, they will both bear the burden equally. Family law attorneys are like dentists; no matter how much you like them, you don’t really want to be there. Find someone who makes the process less painful for you, someone you won’t mind being around during one of the toughest times of your life.
